Connecticut man shot at while confronting car thieves in Greenwich

Police have made an arrest after thieves stole a car from the driveway of a home in Connecticut and shot at a person who tried to intervene.

The victim is speaking out on Wednesday and said his near-death experience serves as a cautionary tale.

It happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday on Windy Knolls Road.

Gonzalo Forero said his father-in-law heard voices in his driveway and realized his Honda Pilot was being stolen.

Forero ran outside barefoot and in boxer shots to try to catch up to the thieves who had stopped further down the block.

"Am I thinking? No, it's fight or flight," he said. "And I'm not a man that runs away."

As he approached, the suspect getting into the passenger side pulled out a gun. Video shows a muzzle flash is barely visible before the car drives away as Forero pulls up.

The vehicle was recovered in Bridgeport a short time later.

Greenwich police are reminding residents to lock their cars and they advise against confronting thieves.

It's something the 31-year-old Forero realizes he shouldn't have done.

He is especially fortunate as his father-in-law saw the suspect's hand accidentally hit the door, which directed the bullet downward.

The two men, who are deeply religious, credit divine intervention.

"God blessed me with how he created me and in this situation, I must have had angels with me more than the demons that were in them, and that's really what saved my life," Forero said.

Charges against the unidentified suspect are still pending.
