Community mourns 14-year-old football player killed in Hesperia shooting

Hundreds gathered in Hesperia for an emotional candlelight vigil honoring 14-year-old Jeremy "Tank" Rosales, a standout football player and straightA student who was shot and killed last week.

Friends, teammates and coaches described Rosales as a dedicated athlete and loyal friend whose talent and character left a lasting impression.

"That was like my brother, not by blood but by love," teammate Gavin Hernandez said. "I've known him since I was like 9, 10 years old... went to championship together, got a ring together, went to nationals."

Rosales, known as "Tank" for his size and strength, attended Oak Hills High School and trained at Team Elite Sports Academy, a program focused on guiding young athletes and keeping them off the streets. Many who gathered at the vigil said they first met him there.

"We would always be at practice together... doing our reps together. He was my partner for everything," said teammate Jacob Chavez.

"Tank is TANK," said Dominic Monica, a line coach. "He carried that name because of the things he does out on the field. He's just a great kid."

Rosales was shot and killed Friday at Mojave Vista Park, not far from his family's home. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting. No information has been released about potential suspects.

During the vigil, mourners released balloons into the night sky as his family watched. Rosales' sister spoke through tears, describing the pain of losing him.

"My brother Jeremy is our everything... he's number 32 on the field but he's number one in our hearts," she said.

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
