On Saturday, a commemorative street sign was placed in north Omaha to honor a woman who helped local schools become desegregated.Nellie Mae Webb was part of a group that sued Omaha Public Schools, alleging continued segregation after the landmark brown v board of education ruling. The court ruled, saying the district had to integrate its schools by the beginning of the 1976-1977 school year."With her going to court and to fighting Omaha schools and actually winning, which was a great honor because we don't know where we will be today, we still will be segregated in schools. If it wasn't for her and what she was doing for this community," said Webb's great granddaughter Diana Wells.Webb's family said her granddaughter Shanell was integral to getting the commemorative sign put up near 40th and Pinkney streets.NAVIGATE: Home | Weather | Local News | National | Sports | Newscasts on demand |
