A pedestrian was struck while crossing a South Jersey road last Saturday evening, renewing concerns among residents about traffic safety.
The accident happened at the intersection of Collings Avenue and West Browning Road in Collingswood
The incident occurred at 6:10 p.m., according to surveillance footage reviewed by neighbors.
Police say the victim was treated and is believed to have been released from the hospital.
Jacki Stout, who lives at the intersection, said the crash confirmed her long-standing fears.
"I know one day we're going to see someone get actually hit or injured and killed, and that's finally happened," Stout said.
Neighbors say the sounds of collisions -- whether between cars or vehicles and street signs -- have become disturbingly routine.
"It's really stressful," Stout added.
Karen Nickerson, another Collingswood resident, said she wasn't surprised by the crash.
"I figured it was something like that was going to happen because of the way the cars speed," Nickerson said.
Grace Kehoe, who also lives nearby, described the situation as "a nightmare."
Kehoe believes a traffic light could help improve safety. Other residents have suggested stop signs or illuminated crosswalks.
However, Collings Avenue is a county road, and Camden County officials say they are aware of traffic issues in the area, particularly due to its proximity to White Horse Pike. Safety improvements were promised there last year.
Neighbors say they've been pleading with township officials for safety measures.
"What we had asked was for them to work with the county, for them to coordinate some sort of traffic study," Stout said.
Residents say they are still waiting for action closer to their neighborhood.
Collingswood Borough says it is looking into problems at this intersection and possible solutions.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation also says it has done a study on the corner and is looking at the results.
