Chicago protest: On Veterans Day 2025, those who served rally, march through downtown protesting ICE, Border Patrol

A Veterans Day rally Tuesday built on a tradition of more than 50 years of veterans speaking out for peace and justice.

This year, veterans were speaking out against what they say are violent tactics by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol.

Many who served the U.S. in wars ranging from Vietnam to Iraq joined together Tuesday to call for the protection of democracy.

"We are in a time where militarism is being enacted through border imperialism," said Arti Walker-Peddakotla, with About Face.

The rally at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the Chicago Riverwalk was organized by the veterans group About Face.

Participants gathered to protest U.S. immigration enforcement and Border Patrol actions, saying those practices go against the values they fought to defend.

"As service members, we swore an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That oath still matters, and requires all of our courage to defend it," veteran Joanne Gutierrez said.

The group called out the Trump administration and Border Patrol Cmdr. Greg Bovino, challenging what they call the militarization of both foreign policy and domestic law enforcement.

They were joined by labor leaders and politicians.

"I'm proud to stand with you today. I'm proud to stand with a community who understands how interconnected our struggles are," said Rep. Delia Ramirez, a Democrat representing the 3rd District.

After the rally, the group marched from the riverfront, making their way to Federal Plaza, where they assembled before the rally ended for the day.

The Veterans Day rally has been held every year, but organizers say this is the first time in several years that there has been a march.
