Chicago firefighters held at gunpoint in attempted carjacking outside Belmont Gardens fire station, police and alderman say

Chicago firefighters were held at gunpoint outside a station on Thanksgiving Day, police and an alderman said.

The crime happened at about 7:15 a.m. in front of Engine91's quarters in the 2800-block of N. Pulaski Road, police confirmed.

Forty-fifth ward Alderman Jim Gardiner said masked suspects were trying to steal a vehicle belonging to a member of the fire dept. in front of the firehouse.

Police said three victims tried to approach the suspects who were trying to take a car. The suspects then pulled out a gun.

The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle in an unknown direction.

"I always felt safe at the firehouse even in questionable neighborhoods," a spokesperson for the Second Battalion CFD said on social media.

No injuries were reported. No one is in custody.

"If first responders are vulnerable to guns being drawn while working, what is to prevent these individuals from targeting civilians?" Alderman Gardiner said.
