Chicago crime: Dead rat, 'derogatory' handwritten note found at Alderman Andre Vasquez's office on North Western Avenue, CPD says

A dead rat and a handwritten note were found Sunday night at a Chicago alderman's office on the city's North Side.

Chicago police officers responded to a call for service around 7:30 p.m. to the 5600-block of North Western Avenue in the West Ridge area.

Officers discovered a deceased rat on the doorstep of a building and a handwritten note containing "derogatory statements" was left at an office there, CPD said.

The office is that of Alderman Andre Vasquez, which is located at 5620 N. Western Ave.

An ABC7 crew on the scene witnessed the alderman, who appeared to be speaking with investigators.

In a statement on Facebook, Alderman Vasquez said, "Tonight, the Chicago Police Department alerted us of an incident at the 40th Ward Office. A dead rat was left in front of our office, along with a threatening note taped to the door that, among other things, referred to undocumented immigrants as vermin.
In this current political climate, we take these threats seriously, and are working with the Chicago Police Department to investigate. In the meantime, the 40th Ward Office will remain open. We are and will always be steadfast in our commitment to serving 40th Ward neighbors and supporting the rights of the immigrant community."

No one was in custody as Chicago police continue to investigate.
