Car owner shoots, kills alleged attempted car thief in Philadelphia's Hunting Park section: police

Philadelphia police are investigating after they say a man who was allegedly trying to steal a Mercedes in the city's Hunting Park section was fatally shot by the car's owner.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Monday on North Warnock Street, near Venango Street.

Police say it is still early in the investigation and are trying to determine exactly what happened.

When officers arrived to the scene, they zeroed in on a black Mercedes on the sidewalk that was still running.

Police say the suspect did get one shot off before being struck by gunfire.

He was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

Police are trying to talk to the owner of the Mercedes to get more information.

Detectives are also checking surveillance video in the area.
