Car Crosses Double Yellow Line To Pass Tractor Before Crash In Franklin

FRANKLIN, NJ — Abma's Farm of Hillsborough is reminding drivers to drive carefully and respect farm equipment after a crash last week.

On Sept. 15, at around 12:07 p.m., a John Deere tractor with a large mower trailer attachment was driving along Amwell Road when an unknown vehicle reportedly crossed the double-yellow line to pass the tractor, said Franklin Police Captain Vincent T. Wilson.

The vehicle then abruptly stopped, forcing the tractor operator to stop suddenly. This led to the mower trailer becoming dislodged, resulting in damage to both the tractor and trailer, said Wilson.

"To avoid hitting the car, Jimmy slammed on his brakes and swerved, but the tractor's rear axle caught a raised section of the road. The force and angle caused the mower hitch to break loose and swing up and over the rear axle alongside the tractor cab," according to

The third-generation farmer, Jimmy, walked away unharmed.

"Our family is thanking God that this story didn't end in tragedy," said the farm.

Abma's Farm reminded drivers that tractors drive slowly because they're hauling massive equipment that can't stop on a dime.

"Because they're working to grow food and raise animals for your table. Because safety is always on their mind. Please drive carefully. Respect farm equipment. Share the road. Look out for your neighbors," said the farm.

Abma's Farm is located at 282 Amwell Road in Hillsborough.
