Brooklyn man shot with crossbow outside of Hanson Place apartment; suspect charged with assault

A man who shot a stranger with a crossbow outside the victim's Brooklyn apartment Wednesday morning, has been charged, according to police.

The suspect, 64-year old Joseph English, approached the 56-year-old victim, who was sitting on the staircase of his Hanson Place apartment and smoking a cigarette, around 4:40 a.m.

English, described as "emotionally disturbed," told the other man "I'm going to shoot you," before leaving, returning with a crossbow, and shooting him in the hip.

The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries, but is expected to be OK. Police recovered the crossbow used in the attack.

English has been charged with assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

Police say the two men did not know each other.

It's not yet clear why English shot the victim with the crossbow.
