Bridgeport, Chicago shooting: $10,000 reward offered after Gabriela Ochoa shot, killed during armed robbery on West 27th Street

A reward is being offered for information after a gunman shot and killed a woman while trying to rob her last week on Chicago's Southwest Side.

Chicago police said the attack happened in the Bridgeport neighborhood's 800-block of West 27th Street around 8:40 p.m. last Saturday.

A 31-year-old woman was outside when a male suspect in a dark-colored sedan shot her, police said. CPD said the suspect, of an unknown age, was with a group of people who were trying to take the victim's belongings.

The victim, shot in the chest, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified her as Gabriela Ochoa.

Cook County Crime Stoppers is now offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest in Ochoa's murder.

"Gabriela Ochoa's family, and our entire community, deserve justice," Paul Rutherford, Executive Director of Cook County Crime Stoppers, said in a statement. "If you know anything that can help identify those responsible, please come forward. Your tip can be submitted anonymously, and it could help take violent offenders off our streets. All you have to do is call our Hotline at 1-800-535-STOP(7867) or go online to CPDTIP.com."

There is no one in custody, and Area One detectives are investigating.

No further information about the shooting was available.

Ald. Nicole Lee of the 11th Ward shared the following statement last week:
"Tonight, we mourn the loss of the young woman who was shot and killed around 8:30 PM Saturday night near the northern border of Palmisano Park during what appears to be an attempted robbery. Our prayers go out to all those who knew Gabriella Ochoa. This is a tragic and unnecessary loss. We will not rest until the person or group who took her life are found and put to justice.
"We've had a series of escalating violent attacks in that area, including a non-fatal shooting around 12AM on August 11 around 29th and Poplar, and a string of burglaries on the SW side targeting seniors, including an incident at 2600 South Shields this past week.
"I am extremely concerned about this rash of disgustingly bold and violent crimes, and CPD will be focusing increased patrols on the area.
"While no precaution can fully deter those bent on violence, be aware that many of these events have a common denominator of people in groups, approaching in cars, and the burglary cases may be connected to people going on vacation. Look out for your neighbors who are out of town, be extremely proactive to report any suspicious vehicles to the police (especially those without license plates), and unfortunately, be cautious around the park in the evening hours."
