Briana Soto death: Troy Lamar Fox sentenced to 358 years in prison for murder of Long Beach teen, attempted murder of other teens

A man has been sentenced to 358 years -- essentially life in prison -- for murdering a 17-year-old girl and for the attempted murder of four other minors, the Los Angeles district attorney announced.

A jury convicted 34-year-old Troy Lamar Fox in March. He was found guilty of first-degree murder, and the jury found true the special allegation that he personally used a firearm in the killing. He was also convicted of four counts of attempted murder.

Briana Soto, a high school senior, was walking home from her job at McDonald's in March 2024 when she was shot near 11th Street and Lewis Avenue in Long Beach . She died three days later in the hospital.

Two weeks later, prosecutors say Fox opened fire with a rifle on a vehicle with four minors inside near Pine Avenue and 14th Street. No one was killed in that incident.

"Briana Soto had her whole life ahead of her -- she was getting ready for her prom, her 18th birthday, and graduation," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. "Today's sentence ensures the person who stole her future will never be free to harm another innocent person. While this punishment cannot undo the pain he caused, it is a step toward justice for Briana, her loved ones, and our community."

The DA's office said Fox also has prior convictions for attempted robbery and making criminal threats.
