A 32-year-old Chicago man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and more in a burglary and police shooting earlier this week in Englewood, CPD said Friday.
Barry Hayes has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, criminal damage to government property between $500 and $10,000, aggravated battery of a peace officer, aggravated assault of a peace officer and leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, police said.
Hayes was arrested just after 5:07 a.m. Wednesday in the 5800-block of South Princeton Avenue, after driving a car toward a CPD officer and hitting the officer, police said.
Hayes continued driving toward other officers, hitting a marked squad car, police said.
Chicago police said that at about 5 a.m. Wednesday, officers were alerted to people stealing boxes from railcars in the area of the 5800-block of South Princeton Avenue.
When police approached, Hayes drove the car at them, CPD said.
Officers fired their weapons at him, but no one was hit.
Police previously said two guns were recovered from his vehicle. Hayes was hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash, police said.
The officer struck by the vehicle was taken to a hospital in good condition and two additional officers were taken to a hospital for observation.
A second van was seen driving away and later found in the 7100-block of South Yale Avenue, police said.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, and the van hit two squad cars, police said.
A 30-year-old suspect got out of the van, and was hit by the van, police said.
The van was later recovered unoccupied a short time later in the 7500-block of South State Street, police said.
The suspect in the van was taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said.
No additional charges have been announced.
Two officers were taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries in good condition, police said.
Door camera video near 70th Street and Yale also shows what looks like a white van speeding away from the neighborhood as Chicago police arrive on scene.
Hayes is due in court Friday.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shots fired.
