Angelina Davis death: Father demands justice after DUI suspect in fatal Carson hit-and-run crash released from jail

A family is mourning after a woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash on the 110 Freeway in Carson. Months later, no charges have been filed against the alleged DUI driver involved in the incident.

"It doesn't sit right, because... it's injustice," said Anthony Mata, in tears as he mourns the death of his daughter.

Video from the aftermath of the crash shows the car ripped apart on the side of the 110 Freeway.

Back in June, Angelina Davis was riding in the car with her boyfriend when California Highway Patrol said a speeding car hit them from behind. The car crashed into a guardrail near Torrance Boulevard.

"The suspect hit my daughter at 11:35 on Father's Day. He fled the scene," Mata said.

According to CHP, the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He was on the 110, just north of where the accident happened.

Now, Davis' father is outraged that a short time later, the suspect was released from jail.

"If you cause an accident, you leave the scene, it's a felony regardless," Mata said.

Mata says when he called the district attorney's office, he was told the case was under review and claims the DA didn't tell him what was happening or why. His concern is, if the suspect is out, he could try to leave.

"He can leave the state. He can go to Tijuana. He can, I mean, he's just living his best life right now, while my daughter's in an urn," Mata said.

Eyewitness News contacted the District Attorney's office, which said the case is currently under review.

Officer Bobby Eurin with CHP sent Eyewitness News the following statement:

"The case is actively being investigated. We are getting more information from the coroner's office and from our accident investigation team to reconstruct this incident. As soon as we get that we can resubmit it to the DA's Office."

Meanwhile, Mata says he will wait. He says his daughter had just celebrated her birthday a few days before the crash, and was planning a future with her boyfriend.

"She was actually coming out, this Friday, she was bringing out her amazing boyfriend, Brady, who was driving the car, who was injured as well," Mata said. "She was bringing him out here this Friday to introduce him to us for a possible future marriage."
