All Omaha police officers injured in shootout with suspect released from hospital

All four Omaha police officers injured in a shooting at Quiktrip are out of the hospital. On Monday, OPD confirmed the officers are recovering at home. Omaha police said Sgt. Emilio Luna, Detective Brock Rengo, Detective Christopher Brown and Detective Jordan Brandt were injured in a shootout with Juan Melgar-Ayala on Dec. 4. It happened as officers confronted Melgar-Ayala at the gas station near 32nd and L Street. Police said the 28-year-old shot Michael Kasper earlier that day at Phil's Cash Saver near 30th and Ames. They have not identified a motive in that shooting. Six officers in total were involved in last week's shootout with Melgar-Ayala. All were placed on paid critical incident leave, per OPD policy.
