93-year-old man turns himself in for allegedly fatally shooting spouse in Fremont parking lot: police

A 93-year-old man phoned Fremont police early Saturday and said he wanted to turn himself in for fatally shooting his 86-year-old spouse, authorities said.

Officers detained Richard Hocking beside his vehicle in the parking lot of a grocery store in the 5000 block of Mowry Avenue about 12:22 a.m., police said in a press release.

The victim, who was found in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Their name was withheld. A firearm was discovered in the vehicle, police said.

Police said Hocking gave detectives a statement about his reason for the killing, which was not disclosed.

The Alameda County District Attorney's Office will be reviewing the case, the city's first homicide in 2026, police said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Fremont Police Investigations Unit at (510) 790-6900.
