A violent end to the celebration of Dominican heritage in the Bronx on Sunday leaves three people shot and one person stabbed all in the span of an hour.
The violence happened on the same day Mayor Adams touted a milestone in the battle against gun violence in New York City with three thousand illegal guns taken off the streets so far this year.
Shots were fired as the post-parade crowd lingered on the Grand Concourse at 170thStreet sent people scrambling to safety.
"We heard gunshots and everybody running. So everyone just told us to go and we started running with them," said Sienna.
Police say there were three violent incidents in the area. A 19-year-old man stabbed in the hip, a 24-year-old man shot in the buttocks and a man and a woman, both 19 who were shot in the neck and ankle in the same location. All of the incidents happened in the span of an hour just before 6 p.m.
"I just heard something that sounded like gunshots. I heard about four of them. I ain't seen nobody get hurt though," said one paradegoer.
The parade that marched up the Concourse all afternoon was largely peaceful. Even those who heard the gunfire did not seem phased. Plenty of police officers were there to handle it.
"A place like this, you know, like in the parade, something's bound to happen, so stay prepared," added Sienna.
Police were asking people to clear the area at the end of the parade route and were threatening them with arrest if they did not comply.
"Just since the start of this year, the NYPD has already moved over 3,000 illegal guns off our street, " said Mayor Adams on Sunday.
Just a short time before the violence broke out, Adams, still wearing a Dominican cap after visiting the parade, joined the police commissioner and other leaders at the 42 Precinct in the Bronx to thank the city's police officers for seizing all those guns.
Yanely Henriquez lost her 16-year old daughter Angellyh Yambo in 2022 and has since become an activist to help reduce gun violence, especially affecting teenagers.
"My daughter was just a few blocks away from her school when she was struck by a stray bullet fired from a ghost gun," Henriquez said.
Police say the numbers of teenage victims and shooters still remains stubbornly high, and it is early to claim victory for the year or even the summer, however the numbers overall are down.
