Police are investigating three homicides and a shooting that unfolded in the Bronx over the weekend, including a beating death at a homeless shelter, according to NYPD officials.
The first killing happened just before 9 p.m. Saturday at a men’s shelter on Phelan Place and Billingsley Terrace in Morris Heights, officials said. Police responded to a 911 call about an unconscious person at the building and found a 48-year-old man who had been attacked with a metal locker door while he was sleeping.
First responders took the man to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later arrested 37-year-old shelter resident Anthony Mawuena in connection with the incident and charged him with murder, manslaughter and weapons possession.
Officials said it was unclear whether Mawuena knew the other man, whom they did not immediately identify. Information for the defendant’s lawyer was not available early Monday.
In the second homicide, after 11 p.m. Saturday, police arrested another man for a lethal assault at an apartment building on East 162nd Street and Courtlandt Avenue in Melrose. Officials said 33-year-old Tyquan McBride was charged with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and weapons possession for fatally stabbing a 48-year-man and injuring a 39-year-old man.
Police said the 48-year-old, who was stabbed in his neck, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 39-year-old was taken to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition with several slashes to his arm.
Police did not immediately identify the man who died, and said they were still investigating McBride’s relationship to the two victims. Officials said McBride lived in the building where the incident happened. Information for his lawyer was not yet available Monday.
Violence flared again in the Bronx around 5:45 p.m. Sunday, when police responded to a shooting inside a building on Southern Boulevard and East 180th Street. Officials said 25-year-old Chanler Reams, who lived in the building, was shot in his head and first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police did not make any immediate arrests in the case and had no description of a potential suspect as they investigated a motive for the killing.
About three hours later, NYPD officers responded to a shooting on Brook Avenue and East 142nd Street in Mott Haven. Police said a 16-year-old boy and 20-year-old man were both shot in their backs, while a 29-year-old man was shot in his leg. First responders took all three to Lincoln Hospital in stable condition.
Officials said they arrested two Bronx residents in connection with the incident: 23-year-old Jorge Correa and 18-year-old Jaden Hall, who were both charged with attempted murder and weapons possession. Information for their lawyers was not immediately available, and police were still investigating a potential motive for the shooting.

Killings are down more than 17% in the borough compared to the same period last year, though they have doubled in the 42nd Precinct, where McBride was arrested. Homicides are also up about 20% in the 48th Precinct, where Reams was killed and which includes Belmont, East Tremont and West Farms.
