A basketball game in the Bronx ended in bloodshed when several shooters opened fire.
Bullets hit five people, killing one man on Saturday in Haffen Park off Gunther Ave in Baychester.
A 17-year-old girl, Anthonaya Campbell remains in critical condition.
Jennifer Talbot says her daughter dreamed of becoming a speech pathologist to help others express themselves. Now, Campbell can't speak after being shot in the back of her head. The bullet is now lodged behind her eye.
"She must have got up and tried to run. My grandson was there and he ran up and thought that she was dead. And my other daughter went down there and panicked and somebody else started to do CPR," Talbot said.
Authorities say Campbell was the youngest of the five victims in the shooting at a basketball tournament in Haffen Park.
"My niece just turned 17, she didn't deserve this. Nobody could deserve this," said Elizabeth, the victim's aunt.
A 32-year-old man was killed after being struck in the chest. Two others were shot in the back and are expected to survive. A 42-year-old man was hit in the arm.
As late summer, gun violence continues to wreak havoc in the city, the mother was dragged through emotional whiplash on Saturday. Talbot just graduated from her PhD program when she got the call her daughter was in the ICU.
"It took more than 17 minutes for my daughter to get CPR, which made a big difference in her condition. If we had officers actually present, it would have been a lot sooner," Talbot said.
Talbot adds that her daughter is not breathing on her own, but on Sunday they wanted to give her a blood transfusion, so they are hoping for the best.
