12-year-old boy hit by stray bullet while inside North Philadelphia store: Police

A 12-year-old boy was injured by a stray bullet Tuesday night while inside a corner store with his mother in North Philadelphia.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. near 18th and Huntingdon streets. The boy, who was helping his mother behind the counter, was struck in the shoulder when a bullet pierced the store window.

He was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children and is listed in stable condition.

According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, a 25-year-old woman told police she had been involved in an altercation with a male driver moments before the gunfire erupted.

Police say the man allegedly fired shots from a vehicle, and the woman returned fire from the sidewalk. At least nine shell casings were recovered at the scene.

"The 12-year-old boy was behind the counter helping the mother out when a stray bullet went through the window and struck the boy in the store," Small said.

The woman is being interviewed by police. Authorities are still searching for the male suspect, believed to have been driving a dark-colored blue sedan.
