10-year-old boy among 2 killed in Newark shooting; 3 others injured

Two people were killed including a child, and three others were wounded after gunfire erupted in Newark's South Ward.

It happened around 7 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Leslie Street.

A 10-year-old boy and a 21-year-old woman were pronounced dead at University Hospital

Three other victims, an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man are all in stable condition.

The sheer volume of shell casings had business owners in the area ducking for cover.

"Everybody hear the police. You say 'what happened?' Everybody think it's a firecracker," said liquor store owner Rafael.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy released a statement Saturday night saying,

"I have been updated on a shooting that took place earlier tonight in the South Ward of Newark (HE WRITES) where preliminary details indicate that multiple victims were shot and killed, including a child."

At least 17 evidence markers could be spotted as police bombarded the area.

Lamont Vaughn of the Newark Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery has seen too many families deal with this pain.

"It's not something that is treated with one dose of medicine. It's a multilayered approach that has to happen. And it takes the community, it takes the government, it takes the business community. It takes the parents, the residents -- it takes everybody," Vaughn said.

The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
