1 dead in South Philadelphia double shooting at Broad and Packer; car riddled with bullets

One person is dead and another critically injured after more than 20 shots were fired in South Philadelphia Thursday evening, according to police.

The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. near Broad Street and Packer Avenue.

Police say a man in his 20s was found shot multiple times throughout his body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A second victim, also a man in his 20s, ran to a nearby bar for help after being shot twice in the torso. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said a vehicle believed to be connected to the victims was found still running and unattended near the scene.

"We found a four-door sedan that was struck at least 15 times by gunfire - mainly on the driver's side and in the rear windshield," Small said.

Investigators believe one or both victims were inside the vehicle when the gunfire erupted. The car also struck another vehicle while attempting to get away. A woman inside that second vehicle was not injured.

Police say at least 21 shell casings were found at the scene. The shooter or shooters were last seen fleeing in a silver or dark-colored SUV.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 215-686-TIPS.
